Green Jacket Dreams: Unveiling the Top Contenders at The Masters

The Masters 2024

As the world's elite golfers descend upon the hallowed grounds of Augusta National, the buzz surrounding the 2024 Masters is substantial. This storied major championship, steeped in tradition and prestige, promises an epic showdown as the game's biggest names chase the ultimate prize – the coveted green jacket.

The azaleas are in full bloom, the putting surfaces are immaculate, and the famed Georgia pines frame each hole in picture-perfect splendour. It's a setting that has inspired generations of golfers to chase their dreams of Masters glory.

Let's dive into this blog, where we will unveil some of the top contenders in the Masters, along with some of our team's predictions!

Augusta National - April 2011

The Defending Augusta National Champion

Jon Rahm

All eyes will be on Jon Rahm as he arrives at Augusta National brimming with confidence after his four-stroke victory in 2023. The reigning champion has proven his mettle on this demanding course, joining the elite company of Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal, and Sergio Garcia as Spanish winners of the iconic green jacket. With his precision ball-striking and unwavering focus, Rahm will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with as he aims to go back-to-back and etch his name further into master lore.

As our team member Ian predicts, "Jon Rahm won last year's tournament, 2023, by 4 strokes. He has 5/6 top ten finishes in the last 6 years at Augusta. So he should be a strong contender. He also wants to prove that after leaving the PGA Tour, he is still a contender to win the majors over his friends and golfing counterparts."

The Hottest Player

Scottie Scheffler

If there's one player who has the potential to dethrone Rahm, it's Scottie Scheffler. The world number one has been on an absolute tear, winning multiple PGA Tour events, including the prestigious Players Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Scheffler's precision iron play and clutch putting make him a formidable contender on any golf course. However, at Augusta National, where he won his first major title in 2022, he could be downright unstoppable.

Our team member Chris Wood echoes this sentiment, stating, "If you asked me for 2 reasons why Scottie will win, I'd say his improvement in putting and consistency in driving accuracy."

Chasing the Grand Slam

Rory McIlroy

For years, Rory McIlroy has been knocking on the door at Augusta, tantalisingly close to joining the elite group of players who have won the career grand slam of all four major championships. With a stellar track record at the Masters, including numerous top-ten finishes, McIlroy will undoubtedly be one of the favourites to finally capture that elusive green jacket and etch his name in golf's history books alongside legends like Woods, Nicklaus, Player, and Gene Sarazen.

As our team member Daryl Symonds predicts, "Rory has an amazing record at Augusta, and with his vast experience in Major championships, you really feel his time has to come to put on the famous green jacket."

Augusta National - April 2011

The Augusta Specialist

Cameron Smith

If there's one player who seems tailor-made for Augusta's challenging greens, it's Cameron Smith. The Australian's deft touch around the greens and sublime short game has already earned him a runner-up finish at the Masters. After his triumph at the 150th Open Championship, he'll be hungry to add another major title to his resume. Smith's ability to navigate the treacherous slopes and undulations of Augusta National could make him a serious contender come the final round.

The LIV Golf Threat

Dustin Johnson

While much of the focus will be on the PGA Tour's biggest stars, we can't overlook the potential impact of LIV Golf players like Dustin Johnson. The 2020 Masters champion has an incredible track record at Augusta, and his prodigious length off the tee could give him a distinct advantage over the field. As one of the most accomplished LIV players in the Golf ranks, Johnson will undoubtedly be a talking point throughout the week, especially if he finds himself in contention for a second green jacket.

As Chris Wood points out, "If I were looking at reasons why Dustin Johnson can win, I would say form and driving distance."

Augusta National - April 2011

First-Timers With a Chance

Ludvig Aberg & Wyndham Clark

The Masters has a way of producing unlikely heroes, and this year's field features a couple of first-timers who arrive at Augusta National with major momentum on their side. Ludvig Aberg, fresh off a superstar collegiate career at Texas Tech, where he was the top-ranked amateur in the world and swept all the major player of the year awards, will be making his Masters debut. The talented Swede has already proven his mettle on golf's biggest stages, earning a DP World Tour win and a PGA Tour victory in his first few months as a professional.

Joining Aberg as a Masters rookie is Wyndham Clark, the reigning U.S. Open champion. Clark's breakthrough year in 2023 included not only his major triumph at Los Angeles Country Club but also his first PGA Tour win and a debut appearance at the Tour Championship. With his recent hot streak, which includes a course-record 60 at Pebble Beach and a runner-up finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Clark could very well continue to defy the odds and etch his name in Masters history.

Augusta National - April 2011

Consistent Contenders

Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, and Viktor Hovland

While the spotlight will shine brightly on the favourites and newcomers, Augusta National has a way of rewarding consistency and experience. Players like Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, and Viktor Hovland may not garner the same headlines, but their impressive master records and major pedigree make them formidable contenders in their own right.

Cantlay, the 2021 PGA Tour Player of the Year, has finished inside the top 20 at Augusta in three of the past five years and arrives fresh off a string of strong performances to start 2024. DeChambeau, the 2020 U.S. Open champion, has already tasted success at Augusta, earning Low Amateur honours in 2016 and sharing the opening-round lead with Brooks Koepka in 2019.

Finau, a model of consistency, has made the cut in each of his six previous Masters appearances, including three top-10 finishes. And Hovland, the dashing Norwegian star, earned Low Amateur honours in 2019 and has yet to miss a cut at Augusta National, setting the stage for a potential breakthrough performance.

Inspirational Veterans

Tiger Woods & Phil Mickelson

No Masters would be complete without the presence of golf's living legends and last champions, and this year's field features a pair of icons who continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world. Tiger Woods, making his 26th appearance at Augusta National, is chasing Jack Nicklaus' record of six green jackets. Despite the physical toll of his remarkable career, Woods remains a threat whenever he tees it up, as evidenced by his historic 23rd consecutive made cut at the 2023 Masters.

Joining Woods in the inspirational veteran category is Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion himself. Lefty's swashbuckling style match play and charismatic persona have made him a fan favourite for decades, and at age 52, he's still capable of summoning the magic that propelled him to green jacket glory in 2004, 2006, and 2010.

Augusta National - April 2011

The Future Is Now

Tom Kim & Joaquin Niemann

While past champions Woods and Mickelson represent the game's storied past, the 2024 Masters field is also brimming with young talent that promises to shape golf's future. Tom Kim, the ultra-confident 21-year-old sensation, burst onto the scene last year with multiple wins around the globe, including a successful title defence in Las Vegas. His fearless approach and prodigious ball-striking make him a dark horse candidate to don the green jacket.

Another rising star to keep an eye on is Joaquin Niemann. The Chilean phenom made his Masters debut in 2018 as the top-ranked amateur in the world and has continued to ascend the professional ranks, highlighted by a recent win at the Australian Open. With his power off the tee and rapidly improving the all-around game, Niemann could very well be the next young gun to etch his name in Masters folklore.

The Wild Cards

Brooks Koepka, Matt Fitzpatrick & Xander Schauffele

Of course, no discussion of Masters contenders would be complete without acknowledging the wild cards – the players who possess the talent and pedigree to spoil the party for the favourites. Brooks Koepka, a five-time major champion, led for much of last year's Masters before settling for a runner-up finish. With his length and mental fortitude, Koepka is always a threat, especially after rediscovering his form with a PGA Championship victory in 2023.

Matt Fitzpatrick, the reigning U.S. Open champion, and Tommy Fleetwood, a multiple-time European Tour winner, both possess the skillsets to thrive at Augusta. Fitzpatrick's precision iron play and Fleetwood's deft touch around the greens could very well propel them into the heat of the battle come Sunday's final round.

And then there's Xander Schauffele, the 2021 Olympic gold medalist, who has flirted with Masters glory in recent years. With his consistent ball-striking and clutch gene, Schauffele is always a threat to contend in any major championship, and Augusta National could very well be the stage where he finally breaks through.

Augusta National - April 2011

The Final Round: Our Predictions

Augusta National - April 2011

Check out what our team at Golf Gear Direct predicts for who will win the Masters tournament, and let us know what you think...

Chris Wood:

“Joaquín Niemann is a two-time PGA Tour Winner, and since his move to LIV Golf in 2022, he’s won twice. The most recent of his wins came in March 2024 at Liv Golf Jeddah. Having T16 in the 2023 Masters, Niemann will be looking to win at Augusta in 2024. Joaquin also shot 59 in the opening round at the LIV Golf Mayakoba, fueling his first individual LIV title in February 2024. He brings in good form this season, and I can see him certainly being a contender at Augusta National. If I were looking at reasons why he could win, I would say form and driving distance.

Brooks Koepka is a 5 time Major Champion and the reigning U.S. PGA Champion. For those who watched the Netflix Documentary Full Swing Season 1, it was hard not to feel empathy towards Brooks, who looked at a crossroads with his golf game and clearly was struggling off the course as well. Another LIV player, Brooks, will want to claim a 6th Major at Augusta. He’s made the cut 6 times out of 8 Augusta with 14 rounds under par. He certainly has the long game off the tee to dominate Augusta, and having finished runner-up last year, I wouldn’t bet against him going one better. The reasons why Brooks can win: Mentality and Course Knowledge.

Scottie Scheffler is arguably golf’s hottest property right now. Having just won The Players at TPC Sawgrass, the first man to successfully defend that title, he carries form and confidence heading to Augusta. It’s the putting that’s been a concern, but a recent switch to the TaylorMade Spider X has silenced those doubters with wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational & The Players. Scottie won at Augusta in 2022, so he knows how to win around the course. He’s the world number one for a reason, and as a betting man, I certainly would be wagering that Scottie will feature heading into the back 9 on Sunday. If you asked me for 2 reasons why Scottie will win, I’d say his improvement in his putting and consistency in driving accuracy”.

Daryl Symonds:

Rory had a great 2023 season on Tour and has started the 2024 season well, with yet another win at the Dubai Desert Classic. Although it seems that Rory is in this position heading to Augusta every year, he still goes into any major event as a favourite and UK fans especially will be hoping he can finally complete golf's grand slam title. Rory has an amazing record at Augusta, and with his vast experience in major championships, you really feel his time has come to put on the famous green jacket.

An outside bet and a slightly biased pick, Rose has a very consistent record at The Masters, with top-25 finishes in 14 of his 18 starts at Augusta National, including 11 of the past 13 years. It's now over 10 years since the Englishman won his maiden major trophy at the US Open, but at 43 years old, Rose is still competing with the best in the world and made a comeback in 2023 after some injury lay-offs over the past 2 years. Alongside a comeback win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Rose also recorded top 10s in the Players Championship, Canadian Open and PGA Championship and represented Europe in the Ryder Cup for the sixth time in his career.

Alongside Scottie Scheffler, Clark is one of the most informed players in the world. A win at AT&T earlier this year and two top 2 finishes in the last 2 weeks puts Clark firmly in the running for the 2024 Masters title. Clark won his maiden major title at the 2023 US Open and was impressive in his Ryder Cup debut in Italy last September. Currently up to 4th in the OWGR, Clark sits in the top 10 for Scoring, Birdies and Strokes Gained on the PGA Tour. Clark is making his debut at Augusta, and no rookie has won The Masters since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979, but could that change in 2024?”

Ian Henderson:

“Rory McIlroy Is a joint-favourite to win his first green jacket. He 100% has the game to go out and win and in style. He just needs to keep his head and concentrate while on the course. Hopefully, he is over all the stresses off the course with the USPGA and Liv golf battles and can just play some decent golf.

Scottie Scheffler is on a great run of play at the moment. He seems like he is making more puts again with his back-to-back wins in the Players Champs, and he has the mental strength to take a win. He also won in 2022, so another green jacket is well within his capabilities.

Jon Rahm would be my last pick. He won last year, 2023, by 4 strokes. He has 5/6 top ten finishes in the last 6 years at Augusta. So, it should be a strong contender. He will also want to prove that after leaving the PGA Tour, he is still a contender to win the golf majors over his friends and golfing counterparts”.
