US Open 2024 Preview

US Open 2024 Preview - Golf Gear Direct

Player Picks | Pinehurst No. 2 - The Golf Course

The excitement is building as we approach the 2024 US Open Golf Championship, set to take place at the iconic Pinehurst No. 2 Course in North Carolina. Known for its challenging layout and rich history, Pinehurst No. 2 promises to provide a thrilling backdrop for one of golf's most prestigious events.

Pinehurst No. 2 at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club hosted the 1951 Ryder Cup, where USA captain Sam Snead led his team to a decisive victory over Great Britain, captained by Arthur Lacey. Snead often praised Pinehurst No. 2 as his favourite course. The course will host the US Open again in 2024.

With over 100 years of history and nine courses spread across 2,000 acres in North Carolina's sandhills, Pinehurst is a golfer's paradise. Donald J. Ross, commissioned by James W. Tufts, designed Pinehurst No. 2 in 1907, introducing his signature domed greens that challenge golfers with tricky fall-offs.

Renowned for its balanced design and challenging holes like the 5th, 9th, and 16th, Pinehurst No. 2 hosted the US Open in 1999, 2005, and 2014, with Payne Stewart's iconic putt in 1999 being a memorable highlight.

Robert Trent Jones noted that Pinehurst sees more play in the rain than any other American course, as the sandy terrain offers dry walking conditions.

The Coore and Crenshaw design firm restored Pinehurst No. 2 to its 1930s sandy character in a renovation completed in 2011. This work set the stage for Martin Kaymer's dominant win at the 2014 US Open, where only three players finished under par.
