How Good Are The Titleist Vokey SM9 Wedges?

The Titleist Vokey SM8 Wedge has been the goto wedge for Tour players around the world, with its incredible design focused on distance control, shot versatility and maximum spin.

Well, the new Titleist Vokey SM9 Wedges does that, and more, with so much attention paid to the way that the grooves on the face of the club affect the trajectory of the golf ball, while the multiple grind options that are available mean players have full control of their interaction with the playing conditions.

Vokey has decided to use a new Spin Milled cutting process to use spin milled grooves to create higher levels of durability, as well as provide additional spin.

This is carried out by cutting the face perfectly flat with a high-speed saw, then every groove is individually cut based on loft and finish option - with higher lofts featuring grooves that are wider and shallower and lower lofts that are narrower, deeper grooves.

Micro-grooves are then added between grooves to maximize the level of spin that can be generated. The impact area is then heat-treated to double the durability of the grooves without impacting the way the club feels. This whole process is only completed when the wedge is inspected for 100% quality and performance.

One of the features that the SM9 boasts is the use of their tour-proven grinds. For every shot, every lie and every course there's a grind that is fit for your swing. Finding the right grind for your swing type will provide you with flawless contact, so you can be prepared to hit every kind of wedge shot in all conditions.

How Good Are The Titleist Vokey SM9 Wedges?

The SM9 comes in Vokey’s six Tour-proven sole grinds – F, S, M, K, L, and D – that allow golfers of all skill levels to precisely fit for their swing type. But what is the difference in each one of these grinds?

The F grind is an all-purpose grind particularly suited for full shots and shots that are hit with the square of the club's face. This grind is the most played sand wedge on Tour and is ideal for players who prefer a traditional wedge sole.

Players experience a narrow and versatile design when they choose the S grind. This grind features a full sole that has been narrowed by a trailing edge grind that creates a much faster feel on the turf. The S Grind is the best choice for neutral to firm conditions and is designed for players that like to control the amount of loft with their hands ahead or behind the ball.

Bob Vokey’s personal favourite, the M grind is designed for players to rotate the clubface open and closed to manufacture shots around the green. Using the SM9 wedge with the M grind is ideal for golfers who play with a shallower, more sweeping swing type who play shots for a variety of clubface positions.

For the ultimate bunker club that provides the highest bounce in the SM9 series, the K grind is the one for you. With a wide, full sole wedge with enhanced camber, the K grind is forgiving from a variety of softer sand and turf conditions.

The L grind is the lowest bounce option in the SM9 series that offers maximum greenside versatility with heel, toe and trailing edge relief. The L grind makes the SM9 perfect for firm conditions and designed for precise players who have completed control at impact allowing for maximum shot-making versatility.

And finally, the D grind is an ideal option for players who have a steeper angle of attack who play shots from a variety of clubface positions. This grind blends versatility from a heel, toe and trailing edge grind and forgiveness with its high measured bounce.

While the amount of grinding that has gone into the golf club affects the way golfers can play, the materials and structure used when handcrafting the SM9 wedges has been touted by Titleist as their most technologically advanced design yet. Specifically tuned to create a lower flight while producing higher spin.

The SM9 features a progressive centre of gravity throughout the lofts, which optimises ball flight, accuracy and forgiveness. Using tapered top lines and varied hosel lengths, the Vokey research and development team raised the height of the CG to promote a lower and more controlled ball flight by pushing the CG in the higher lofts.

The movement of the CG also has it located forward of the face, which means that the SM9 has an increased MOI and an exceptional feel.

The SM9 Vokey wedge also looks absolutely stunning and comes in three gorgeous colour designs - Tour Chrome, Jet Black and Brushed Steel. If you would like to have a set of wedges to improve your game, keep a look out for the Titleist Vokey SM9 Wedges at GolfGearDirect.co.uk
