No sooner was our Director, Paul Street diagnosed with Leukaeamia in 2007 he set about fundraisng for Blood Cancer UK as a thank you for the life saving research carried out before his diagnosis which ultimatley saved his life. 17 years later he, together with his friend John Cliff still holds his annual golf day at our sister company venue The Weald of Kent Golf Course in Headcorn, Kent.
On Monday the 29th July 2024 in most glorious weather 124 golfers teed off for a Stableford Team and Individual Competition. Whilst it was a golf competition the main objective of the day was to have fun and raise vital funds to help #beatbloodcancers
We also had the fabulous Hannah Bowen PGA (@hannahgolf96) our 16th tee hosting a beat the Pro Challenge where she alone raised £2300. If you've not expereinced Hannah's presence and skills at a Charity Golf Day she really is a force of nature who adds so much joy and enthusiasm to an event.
The golf course was presented in absolutley fanstatic condition by Andy Gough and his team at The Weald and as ever the food served up by Head Chef Andy Giles and his team was superb.
Adger Brown the experienced comedian and after dinner speaker hosted our presentation dinner and Charity Auction. As always Adger was highly entertaining and helped raise a great sum of money from the auction lots whilst keeping everyone royally amused.
The 'best lot' was a set of Limited Edition Mizuno 'azalea' Golf Irons which Kevin from Capitol kindly purchased.
Barclays supported our event with their corporate matchfunding scheme and we cannt thank them enough. Their staff helped with all manner of tasks on the day and without their continued support this event would not be the same.
Even the raffle raised a record sum of £1,400 so it seemed the golfers were in a generous mood.
In total we raised £21,000 for this worthy cause which in our 17th year represents a record sum.
We were fortunate to have had the support of so many fantastic sponsors too. The primary event sponsor were Captitol Building Services Ltd who have a strong emotional tie to the charity as their Managing Director, 'Kevin Marchesi' Wife is curently undergoing extensive treatment for Acute Myloid Leukaemia.
Blood Cancer is a type of cancer that affects your blood cells. Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma are some of the most common types of Blood Cancer.
There are also types called MPNs and MDS. Blood cancer is caused by changes (mutations) in the DNA within blood cells. This causes the blood cells to start behaving abnormally. In almost all cases, these changes are linked to things we can’t control. They happen during a person’s lifetime, so they are not genetic faults you can pass on.
Some types of blood cancer affect children. Symptoms and treatment can be different between children and adults. Over 40,000 people are diagnosed with a blood cancer each year in the UK, and over 250,000 people are currently living with blood cancer.
Over the last 64 years we've funded £500m of research. Now, we want to beat blood cancer in a generation.
Blood Cancer UK was started in 1960 by the Eastwoods, whose daughter Susan died just weeks after being diagnosed with blood cancer. Susan’s parents wanted to stop others from having to go through what they had, so they started raising money to fund research into finding a cure. When Susan was diagnosed in 1960, only one child in ten survived the type of leukaemia she had. Today, thanks to research, that figure is nine in ten.
We believe that if we continue funding research at the same pace as we have over the last 64 years, 30 years from now, everyone will survive blood cancer.
Read our press release: Golf Gear Direct Teams Up with Top Golf Influencer for Unique Charity Campaign For Blood Cancer UK
As part of their annual Blood Cancer UK Golf Day, Golf Gear Direct teamed up with Hannah Bowen, an Advanced PGA golfer and inclusive coach. As part of their “Beat The Pro Challenge,” Hannah helped them raise over £20,000 in one day.
Golf Gear Direct, a leading online provider of all manner of golfing supplies, accessories, and golf clothing, has announced that they partnered up with the influential golfing world personality Hannah Bowen, in an effort to raise funds for Blood Cancer UK. The unique new charity campaign raised money directly to support blood cancer research and patient support.
Hannah Bowen, who is not just an Advanced PGA professional golfer, but also an inclusive coach, working in events for disability sports, blind golf, and people with autism, was chosen as the perfect fit for the event. Hannah, also an Ambassador for the New To Golf Scheme, regularly participates in events raising money for all manner of causes, helping to promote the good that golf can do for society.
Golf Gear Direct’s choice to support Blood Cancer UK was inspired, in large part, by the diagnosis of its director, Paul Street, with Leukemia in 2007. On discovering that their participation in research carried out before his diagnosis ultimately saved his life, he and his team have been holding an annual golf day at their sister company venue The Weald of Kent Golf Course in Headcorn, Kent.
This year, the event welcomed 125 golfers for both a Stableford Team and Individual Competition. Although the competition was fierce, raising funds was the aim of the day, and the event managed to raise over £20,000 this year. Hannah took part in their Beat the Pro Challenge where she alone raised £2300. If you've not experienced it. The team at Golf Gear Direct was delighted to welcome her, as well as the joy and enthusiasm that she added to the event.
All of the funds raised at the event went to Blood Cancer UK, which has funded over £500 million of research over the past 64 years. Founded in 1960 by the Eastwoods, whose daughter Susan died just weeks after being diagnosed with blood cancer, they have helped to improve the survival rates of children and adults diagnosed with leukemia. Since the diagnosis of their child, Susan, the rates of survival for her particular type of leukemia have risen from one in ten to nine-in-ten.
The team at Golf Gear Direct thanks everyone who came out and supported the event, those who donated, and Hannah Bowen for her participation in the campaign.
